I am training with Team In Training to do a full marathon. This is awesome! It was a bit tricky to get it set up, but I love it! For a beginner it gives me all that I need.
2 Stars Garmin Forerunner 101 does not work for me
The item does not respond as well as I would expect. It has difficulty to connect with satelites even in a relatively open outdoors, and its response is influenced significantly by overhanging trees. I would not recommend this item.

I struggled with getting this unit. I was going back between the Foretrex and the Forerunner. I am not a runner so a few of the features I do not need. The foreunner ends up being cheaper; the software is a bit different. You can switch it to a cycling mode which is perfect for cycling or walking, boating etc. I have found the unit to be light easy to read moving and consistant. I really want to read speed and distance and do some basic waypoint marking. It does this well and with out incident. I like that one screen is a custom one so you get to select three data sets to have there. With a bit of pratice you can get around this unit quickly and see the info you want. I have found it takes it about 5 minutes to get a signal under tree cover. It holds the signal well; I have yet to lose it. It comes with a strap expander which is a must if you want to wear it over clothing or above your wrist. The battery life is just about as they say, 12-15 hours. Being able to change the batteries was a selling point for me…hard to recharge in the bush. All-in-all a good basic unit.

I am training for a marathon and I needed a device to help me measure the distance I have run. I wanted something plain and simple without too many beeps and whistles. The Garmin 101 is perfect and has worked flawlessly. If you are looking for a simple piece of equipment to measure time, pace and distance, look no further.

I recently picked up one of these Forerunner 101’s from Amazon and I have to say that my running (or at least my desire to run) has increased since getting it. I have to run for my yearly Air Force fitness test and I traditionally have hated to run since I am no good at keeping my pace (either running too fast at first and burning out or too slow and having to kill myself catching up) but I really like the Forerunner for helping me out in that area. The device is very accurate and the battery life is very good. The time to sync up with the GPS satellites is very fast (I have noticed that it links up faster if you stand still while you wait). It is hardly noticable on my wrist as it is very light in weight and the wrist strap is comfortable. The setup and usage of the menus were very well thought out and easy to use. I would definately recommend this device for anyone to help in their daily workout.

I recently started to get serious about running.I came across this device and it is fufilling all of my expections.It has a quick set up guide, for those who want to run right away.It has the standard stop watch but also contains such features as a distance tracker and even a virtual trainer so runners can continue to improve their running.The feature i enjoy the most is the GPS function.For trail runners you can track your course, so you’ll never get lost and i live in Japan and i’m using it here. Great Device.

The Forerunner works great. I love knowing exactly how far I’ve run. I thought it might be too big but the size is fine. I usually forget it’s there once I get going. It would be nice if it was rechargeable but for the price I can afford to buy batteries.
1 Star Surprised how bad it was
Knowing Garmin’s great reputation for products, I was disappointed that my Forerunner 101 was such a poor investment. I probably only used it 10 times before the plastic molding that holds one of the strap pins in BROKE. And I certainly was not using outside the realm of any reasonable runner. If it had been the pin that broke, no problem, I’d get a new pin. But since it was the plastic itself, it basically renders it useless. The device is now attached to the strap by one pin and flaps on my wrist if I try to wear it. Not only that, it nevers got good satellite pick-up and, contrary to what Garmin says, the device loses connection if I go under trees, etc. Since the plastic broke after the 90-day repair time, I have to pay $60 at least as a repair fee. That is almost half the cost of a new one. No way! All in all, very disappointed in what I expected to be a great running aid.
